# Can ChatGPT actually see your Shopify products?

Not always. We recorded an early product-level check of Shopify’s catalog layer. When a product had an official match in Shopify’s Global Catalog, ChatGPT showed an official product card in **88%** of 11 live checks. When the match was missing or pointed at the wrong seller, the returned destination was not official.

**Figure:** Fig. 01 · First pass, catalog vs ChatGPT N = 40 products · 8 brands · July 2026

- **34/40** - Products with an official-domain match in Shopify’s Global Catalog
- **8/40** - Product queries where the first Global Catalog result was the wrong seller
- **88%** - Official ChatGPT product card when the Global match existed · 11 live checks
- **4/11** - Live checks that showed a retailer or resale path next to the brand
## What the check covered.

The check covered 40 products from 8 Shopify brands, 5 products each: bestsellers, high-ticket items, bundles, and older edge products. Each product was evaluated on three recorded conditions. Was it in the brand’s own Shopify Storefront Catalog? Did Shopify’s Global Catalog return it with the brand’s official domain attached? And when a shopper asked ChatGPT for that exact product, did ChatGPT render an official product card?

## Three observed patterns.

The sample contained three observed patterns. One brand was not visible in the Global Catalog for any of its 5 products, and every query returned a non-official seller first. Other products were readable in the brand’s own storefront feed but did not appear in the global layer. Some products returned an official path and a retailer path side by side in the same answer.

In the words used across the site, these are “Owns the path,” “Leaks the path,” and “No path.” The labels describe the recorded destination, not purchase completion. This check identifies the observed condition before a fix is proposed.

## A simple check for a store owner.

**01**

### Ask ChatGPT for your top 5 products by exact name.

Record what renders: a brand card, a reseller, or no usable product-page path.

**02**

### Check where the seller link leads.

Record the destination and whether it is your product page or another seller’s page. A returned link does not show that anyone bought the product.

**03**

### Watch for retailer links next to your name.

Being named and receiving a brand-owned product-page path are separate observations.

This field note reports an early check of 40 products across 8 brands, measured July 2026 against Shopify Storefront Catalog, Shopify Global Catalog, and live ChatGPT product prompts. It is not a Genesis report or a standardized benchmark.

Honest caveats: only 11 of 40 products received live ChatGPT checks before ChatGPT rate-limited the session, so the 88% figure is an early sample signal, not a conclusion. We use the catalog as a diagnostic against these observations. It does not establish that Shopify’s Global Catalog directly powers ChatGPT shopping.
